How to Start a Gratitude Journal
Where to start? What to write? Whether you’ve been journaling for years, or just starting out, a blank white page can feel intimidating. When I draw a blank, one of my to-go strategies is to turn to gratitude. My formula is simple. I just open up my journal and write the following:
<The date>
Grateful for:
- …
- …
- …
And then I just list three things that made me smile that day. It could be as brief as 1. strong coffee. That’s it. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But what this list-making exercise does is to release the pressure that comes from the idea that journaling means you have to maintain a word count, or fill up entire pages.
These days, I like to fill my gratitude journal at the end of the day. I use an app called Day One on my phone. It gives me the opportunity to look back on my day and recall the moments that brought me joy.
Since my gratitude journal lives on my phone, (I know, I know, no phones in your bedroom…) I can just type in my 3 things before I call it a night.
Being in a state of gratitude before dozing off to sleep? Bliss… try it.
